Masters Programs

Degrees

The Department offers programs that lead to the following degrees:

Master of Science, With Thesis (Plan I)
Master of Science, Course-Work Only (Plan II)
Master of Engineering

Prerequisites

Students who want to obtain an M.S. in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering, but who have a degree in another field, may be required to take up to ten undergraduate courses if they cannot demonstrate to the departmental graduate adviser that they have previously studied an essentially similar course:

Engineering 102, Engineering 103, Engineering 104, Engineering 105, Mechanical Engineering 106, Mechanical Engineering 107A, Mechanical Engineering 107B, Mechanical Engineering 150A, Mechanical Engineering 165, Mechanical Engineering 171, Mechanical Engineering 172.

Neither these nor any other courses required for a bachelor's degree may be counted toward the graduate program requirements.

Degree Requirements

Master of Science, With Thesis (Plan I)

A minimum of 36 units is required for graduation, and 24 of these must come from coursework with a letter grade. The 24 units of graded coursework must include at least 20 units of graduate coursework in engineering, with a minimum of 12 units coming from MAE courses. Up to 4 units of upper division undergraduate coursework in engineering or any other field that is relevant to the student's research (e.g. math, biology) may also be used. In addition to the 24 unit course requirement, 2 units of seminar (MAE 297) are required (please see page 7 for details). The remainder of the 36 unit requirement is usually made up with thesis research (MAE 299, 290C series) units and/or additional coursework. A thesis must be submitted.

Master of Science, Course-Work Only (Plan II)

A minimum of 36 units of coursework with a letter grade is required for graduation. 32 of these units must be from graduate coursework in engineering, with at least 18 of the 32 units coming from MAE courses. Up to 4 units of upper division undergraduate coursework in engineering or any other field that is relevant to the student's research (e.g. math, biology) may also be counted towards the 36 unit requirement. In addition to the 36 unit course requirement, 2 units of seminar (MAE 297) are required (please see page 7 for details). An examination is required which can take the form of a technical report or successful completion of the department Ph.D. preliminary examination.

Master of Engineering

A minimum total of 36 units of coursework (24 units of which must be graduate level courses in engineering are required and at least 20 of these units must be earned in graduate engineering (200 series) courses, exclusive of seminar and research units. Courses used to satisfy this requirement must be taken on a letter grade basis. In addition to the 24 unit course requirement, 2 units of seminar (MAE 297) are required.  The 36-unit requirement must also include at least eight units of design project (MAE-299).

Students submitting the master of engineering report must follow the Instructions for Preparing and Submitting Theses and Dissertations for Higher Degrees available from Graduate Studies at the Masters Thesis Information site.
