    Changing Majors

    To change to any of the MAE majors (Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautical Science and Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering / Materials Science) from a major in any College (including Engineeing), you must:

    1. be a registered student and have completed at least one quarter (minimum of 12 units) at UC Davis;
    2. have completed not more than 135 cumulative units (excluding AP units); students who have completed more than 135 units will be considered on an appeal basis only;
    3. be in good academic standing and making minimum progress;
    4. have received a letter grade for all courses that satisfy Engineering degree requirements;
    5. have completed MAT 21A, B, C; Physics 9A and Chemistry 2A each with a grade of C- or better and a GPA in these five courses of 2.0 or better.

    Change of Major petitions for students within the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering will be approved when a student is in good standing (specific and general requirements do not need to be met).

    You must submit a petition for change of major by the tenth day of instruction of any quarter to be processed prior to Pass 1 registration for the next quarter. If you have completed more than 135 units you will not be allowed to file a change of major petition except by appeal. Your appeal must include a quarter-by-quarter program plan of study.

    Change of Major petition is available either in 2132 Bainer Hall or on the Registrar's web site. Visit both the College of Engineering Undergraduate Advising web site and the Registrar's web catalog site for more information.

    Advising Holds

    Mandatory holds are placed on registration packets

    To assist students in completing their program in a timely manner, and to ensure that students are prepared for courses, advising holds are placed on students' registration packets once a year. Students are informed if they have an advising hold when they register for courses.

    Hold Schedule

    These schedules are based on the first letter of your last (family) name:

    A - G: Fall Quarter Hold
    Deadline: First day of Winter Quarter

    H - N: Winter Quarter Hold
    Deadline: First day of Spring Quarter

    O - Z: Spring Quarter Hold
    Deadline: First day of Fall Quarter

    To release holds:

    In order to have a hold released, students must complete an Academic Advising Hold Release Form for their major (see links below), and meet with an undergraduate adviser to discuss their study plan for the following three quarters.

    Students need to come to advising office hours or make an appointment prepared with a written academic plan in hand. Please do this during the 4th or 5th week of the quarter in which you have a hold. Do not wait until registration for the next quarter has started.

    Advising Hold Worksheet Release forms are available in the Department Advising Office, 2132 Bainer Hall or below.

    Mechanical Engineering Advising Hold Release Form

    Aeronautical Engineering Advising Hold Release Form

    Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering Advising Hold Release Form

    Mechanical Engineering/Material Science Engineering Advising Hold Release Form

    Visit both the College of Engineering Undergraduate Advising web site and the Registrar's web catalog site for more information.

    Students also should see a faculty adviser for academic and career advising, and to review their study plan sometime during their sophomore and junior year.

    Requirements for Graduation

    Aeronautical Science and Engineering

    Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautical Science & Engineering

    Mechanical Engineering/Materials Science Engineering

    Visit both the College of Engineering Undergraduate Advising web site and the Registrar's web catalog site for more information.

    Technical Electives

    Each program has their own Technical Elective Requirements; please see the Requirements for Graduation from the previous section. Courses that can be used for technical electives (unless your program has a restricted Technical Elective list) are provided on the College of Engineering Undergraduate Advising web site.

    General Education

    General Education requirements:

    24 Units which include 3 courses from Arts & Humanities and 3 courses from Social Sciences.  Two of the above courses must be upper division.

    Visit the Registrar's web catalog site for more information.

    Permission to Add

    To add a course after the 12th day of instruction, approval of the department is required.

    Complete the PTA Request Form, obtain the instructor's signature and return the PTA Authorization Form to the MAE Main Office (2132 Bainer). If permission is granted, the department will issue a PTA number. Use SISWeb to add the course by using the five-digit CRN and the four-digit PTA number. If you are successful, SISWeb will confirm that you are enrolled. A $3.00 fee for the late add will be charged to your account.

    You have 72 hours after the department issues you a PTA number in which to use the number. The PTA number will be revoked after the third day. PTA numbers issued within three days of the deadline must be used by the deadline.
