This UAV was designed and built by a team of students in the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering, during the academic year 2003-2004. It is made mostly of composite materials (carbon fiber, honeycomb, glass fiber, kevlar), with a few parts in aluminum (gear box, wheel attachments). The empty weight is 18 lbs and the UAV was predicted to lift 80 lbs of payload. The team was awarded the best report, best design and overall third place in the SAE Aero Design West "Open Class" competition.
In Front of Bainer Hall, team members (from left) Nghiem Do, Paul Roysdon, Geoffrey Marmonier and Marion Fournier (two French Echange students) and Daniel Hatfield are preparing for departure to the competition site, June 2004
At the competition site near Fort Worth, Texas, some problem occured with the gearbox and the engine would not run. Nghiem and Paul are working on it while Dan watches
Unfortunately, our last chance to take off with 60 lbs was plagued with more engine/gearbox problems to the great disappointment of the team
