What is Formula SAE?

Formula SAE is an international collegiate design competition organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). The goal of Formula SAE is to give engineering students the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge by prototyping a racecar. The culmination of the project comes when universities from all over the world converge to compete in a 4 day event to see who is the best of the best.

Formula SAE is not just engineering; it is managing an entire team. Students organize, finance, and manage every aspect that is required to build an entirely new vehicle. For the competition, the teams must provide a written design report for the car as well as a working prototype. The rules governing the design of the racing car challenge students to apply classroom knowledge in completely new ways.

Dynamic events prove the performance of each vehicle. Events include acceleration, braking, skid pad, autocross and endurance. In addition, each team also proves the merits of their vehicle though reports and presentations in which they verbally defend the engineering decisions that went into the design of the car.
