Professors Mark Modera and Vinod Narayanan are the recipients of major research awards to the Western Cooling Efficiency Center (WCEC) from the California Energy Commission.
Vinod Narayanan is PI on an $1.2 million research contract titled “Energy Efficient HVAC Packages for Existing Residential Buildings”. The co-PI is Dr. Deborah Bennett from Environmental & Occupational health (Public Health department) at UC Davis. Yolo County housing is a partner who will provide the homes for the project. Retrofits will include a novel evaporative chiller, building sealing, and novel ventilation methods developed by EPRI and the Davis Energy group. The impact on building efficiency and indoor air quality as well as market barriers for adoption of such retrofits will be studied.
Mark Modera is PI on an $1.0 million research contract titled “Cost-constrained Optimization of Energy Efficiency for Multifamily and Commercial Buildings”. BIRAenergy and EPRI are sub-contractors on the project focused on the use of EnergyPlus software for building efficiency simulations.
