Assistant Professor Seongkyu Lee has received a three-year grant ($230,541) from the US Army for rotorcraft aeroacoustics research and UC Davis has joined new Vertical Lift Research Center of Excellence (VLRCOE) team. The total team award is $13M.
The title of the project is “Fundamental Aeroacoustics of Coaxial Helicopter Rotors”. Lift-offset coaxial rotors are currently under consideration for modern high-speed rotorcraft for future vertical lift configuration. Vehicles with these rotors have the desirable ability to fly faster and consume less power than conventional helicopters, but little consideration has been given to the acoustic characteristics of such rotors. Prof. Lee’s group will collaborate with Penn State to simulate high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and solve aeroacoustics to better understand the propagation of noise generated by lift-offset coaxial helicopter rotors.
