Alum’s Liquid Cooling Research Earns IEEE ITherm Best Poster Award
Gutta Prudhvi Reddy, an alum of the UC Davis mechanical and aerospace engineering master's program, earned the IEEE Intersociety Conference on Thermal and Thermomechanical Phenomena in Electronic Systems, or ITherm, 2024 Best Overall Poster Award for his research titled "Assessment of Bubble Pump Model for Fluid Directional Motion for Asymmetric Heated Ratchets."
Prudhvi Reddy and his collaborators, Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Vinod Narayanan, and fellow UC Davis mechanical and aerospace engineering alumni Ramuel Safarkoolan and Raymond Odele, developed a test facility at UC Davis, utilizing high-speed videography to capture two-phase flows, and creating image processing and particle tracking velocimetry techniques to analyze how surface asymmetry influences flow dynamics.
"Two-phase liquid cooling is increasingly vital for artificial intelligence and machine learning technology hardware, efficiently managing heat through phase transitions in cooling fluids," said Prudhvi Reddy, who now works at Fermilab. "This research enhances our understanding of these flows, supporting the development of passive cooling solutions for high-density electronics in both terrestrial and microgravity environments like space-based applications."
